Target Information
ALKBH8 catalyzes the methylation of 5-carboxymethyl uridine to 5-methylcarboxymethyl uridine at the wobble position of the anticodon loop in tRNA via its methyltransferase domain. It performs the final step in the formation of 5-methylcarboxymethyl uridine, with preference for tRNA(Arg) and tRNA(Glu).
Additionally, through its dioxygenase domain, ALKBH8 catalyzes hydroxylation reactions forming 5-(S)-methoxycarbonylhydroxymethyluridine, preferentially in tRNA(Gly).
It is required for normal survival after DNA damage and may inhibit apoptosis, promoting cell survival and angiogenesis.
