Specificity:
MHM24 binds to the CD11a subunit of lymphocyte function-associated antigen. It binds to both the high- and low-affinity forms of the antigen.

Preparation:
Spleen cells from BALB/c mice immunised with EBV-transformed human lymphoblastoid cells were fused with P3-NSUlAg4.1 myeloma cells and the resulting hybridomas were screened for antibody production by a radioimmunoassay on T and B cell lines.

CD11a, together with CD18, constitutes leukocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1), the alphaLbeta2 integrin. CD11a is involved in leukocyte adhesion and activation through interactions with ICAM-1, -2, and -3, and plays a role in lymphocyte costimulatory signaling. It is expressed on leukocytes and can shift between low- and high-affinity conformations upon stimulation. CD11a dysfunction is linked to diseases such as benign cephalic histiocytosis and leukocyte adhesion deficiency. Blocking CD11a is a therapeutic approach for inflammatory diseases, with examples including Efalizumab (Raptiva) and simvastatin-mediated modulation.
