Target Information

This gene encodes coagulation factor XIII B subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen to become activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits serve as plasma carrier molecules without enzymatic activity. Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits, identical to those in plasma. Upon activation by thrombin cleavage in the presence of calcium ions, plasma factor XIII dissociates its B subunits and yields the same active enzyme, factor XIIIa, as platelet factor XIII. This enzyme functions as a transglutaminase, catalyzing gamma-glutamyl-epsilon-lysine crosslinking between fibrin molecules to stabilize the fibrin clot. Factor XIII deficiency is classified into two categories: type I (lack of both A and B subunits) and type II (lack of A subunit only), leading to bleeding tendency, defective wound healing, and habitual abortion.
