Target Information

M-CSF (Macrophage colony-stimulating factor, CSF-1) is a key survival and proliferation factor for monocytes, macrophages, and osteoclast progenitor cells. It induces VEGF secretion by macrophages, promoting endothelial progenitor mobilization and neovascularization.
M-CSF exists in multiple bioactive isoforms differing in potency and stability. The full-length protein is membrane-bound but can be cleaved and secreted. It forms a disulfide-bonded homodimer that may be glycosylated or modified with chondroitin sulfate.
Binding to its receptor c-Fms (CSF-1R/CD115) induces receptor dimerization, internalization, and degradation. Functionally, it stimulates differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells into monocyte-macrophage lineages.
Human M-CSF is active on mouse cells, whereas mouse CSF is inactive on human cells.
