다양한 염증 자극에 의해 대식세포 및 내피세포 등에서 발현 및 분비가 유도됩니다.
내피세포에서는 Weibel-Palade 소체에 저장되어 있습니다.
IL-8은 CXCR1 및 CXCR2 수용체를 통해 신호를 전달하며, 이전 명칭으로 NAP-1, GCP-1, MONAP 등이 있습니다.
이 유전자는 염색체 4q 영역의 케모카인 유전자 클러스터에 속하며, 암의 혈관신생 및 성장, 바이러스성 기관지염 등의 병태생리와 관련이 있습니다.
