Target Information

Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione S-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Eight distinct classes of soluble cytoplasmic mammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta.
This gene encodes a glutathione S-transferase belonging to the mu class, which functions in the detoxification of electrophilic compounds such as carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins, and oxidative stress products via conjugation with glutathione.
The mu class genes are located in a cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are highly polymorphic, influencing susceptibility to toxins and carcinogens as well as drug efficacy. Null mutations in this gene are associated with increased cancer risk due to heightened sensitivity to environmental toxins.
