Target Information
GAPDH (Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase) is a catalytic enzyme involved in glycolysis, existing as a tetramer of identical 37-kDa subunits. It catalyzes the reversible reduction of 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate in the presence of NADPH.
Beyond glycolysis, GAPDH is ubiquitously expressed and participates in various cellular processes including:
- DNA replication and repair
- Nuclear RNA export
- Membrane fusion and microtubule bundling
- Regulation of gene expression during apoptosis
- Involvement in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease
Due to its high expression in most tissues, GAPDH is widely used as a protein loading control in Western blot analysis.
