Target Information

Glutathione S-transferase M3 (brain), also known as GSTM3, is an enzyme encoded by the GSTM3 gene in humans. Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione S-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families.
Currently, eight classes of soluble cytoplasmic mammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta.
This gene encodes a glutathione S-transferase belonging to the mu class, which functions in the detoxification of electrophilic compounds—including carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins, and oxidative stress products—by conjugation with glutathione.
The mu class genes are organized in a cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are highly polymorphic, influencing individual susceptibility to toxins and drug responses. Mutations in this class have been associated with a slight increase in certain cancers due to environmental toxin exposure.
