Caspase 2 유전자는 cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) 계열에 속하는 단백질을 암호화합니다. Caspase의 연속적 활성화는 세포 자멸(apoptosis)의 실행 단계에서 중심적인 역할을 합니다. Caspase는 비활성 전구체(proenzyme) 형태로 존재하며, 보존된 아스파트산 잔기에서 절단되어 큰 소단위와 작은 소단위로 나뉘어 활성 효소로 이합체를 형성합니다. 다양한 세포사멸 자극에 의해 이 단백질의 절단이 유도됩니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 인해 여러 전사 변이체가 존재하며, 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화합니다.
