Target Information
The HFE protein is a membrane protein similar to MHC class I-type proteins and associates with beta2-microglobulin. It regulates iron absorption by controlling the interaction between the transferrin receptor and transferrin. Mutations in this gene cause hereditary haemochromatosis, a recessive genetic disorder of iron overload. Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been described, though some remain incompletely characterized.
