Target Information
Ribonucleases (RNAses) H are enzymes that hydrolyze the RNA strands of RNA/DNA hybrids. These enzymes play a major role in removing RNA strands during DNA replication and repair.
RNAse H2 consists of three subunits, all required for enzymatic activity. Mutations in RNAse H2A or other subunits can cause Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome (AGS), a neurological disorder resembling viral brain infections, characterized by elevated IFN-alpha levels in cerebrospinal fluid.
Similar pathological conditions occur with TREX1 mutations, suggesting that RNAse H2 and TREX1 share roles in preventing accumulation of intracellular nucleic acids and regulating innate immune activation.
