Target Information
Glutamate-cysteine ligase (gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase) is the first rate-limiting enzyme of glutathione synthesis. It consists of two subunits: a heavy catalytic subunit and a light regulatory subunit. The catalytic subunit is encoded by this locus, while the regulatory subunit is encoded by a separate gene located on chromosome 1p22-p21. Mutations at this locus are associated with hemolytic anemia due to enzyme deficiency and susceptibility to myocardial infarction.
