Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid long protein hormone (~16 kDa) encoded by the ob (obese) gene. It plays a critical role in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function.
Leptin is primarily secreted by adipocytes and acts through hypothalamic receptors to control feeding behavior, energy expenditure, and thermogenesis. It also influences hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune response, pubertal development, and fetal growth.
Defects in leptin production can cause severe hereditary obesity in both rodents and humans.
