The Golgi complex (Golgi apparatus) is a cellular organelle found in eukaryotic cells responsible for sorting, modifying, and packaging proteins and lipids synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum. It directs these molecules to their final destinations within the cell or for secretion. The organelle was first described by Italian biologist Camillo Golgi in the late 19th century.
