Target Information
ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) is a hormone that plays a major role in stimulating the adrenal cortex. It is produced through cleavage of the polypeptide precursor proopiomelanocortin (POMC), yielding several products including MSH, ACTH, and beta endorphin. ACTH is secreted from the anterior pituitary in response to corticotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus. It stimulates secretion of glucocorticoids such as cortisol, but has limited influence on mineralocorticoids like aldosterone.
