Target Information
ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) is a hormone that plays a major role in stimulating the adrenal cortex. It is formed through cleavage of the polypeptide precursor proopiomelanocortin (POMC), which also produces other peptides such as MSH and beta endorphin. ACTH is secreted from the anterior pituitary in response to corticotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus and stimulates secretion of glucocorticoids like cortisol, with limited effect on mineralocorticoid secretion such as aldosterone.
