Target Information
CD146 (MCAM) is an integral membrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is expressed at cell-cell junctions in endothelial cells and other normal and malignant cell types.
CD146 functions as a calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule and may also act in signal transduction through Fyn kinase activation and tyrosine phosphorylation of proteins involved in actin cytoskeleton assembly.
It plays key roles in endothelial cohesion, melanoma cell interaction with vascular elements enhancing tumor spread, and may act as an adhesion molecule in neural crest cells during embryonic development.
CD146 also acts as a surface receptor triggering phosphorylation of FYN and PTK2 and transient calcium increase.
