S100 단백질은 다양한 세포의 세포질 및/또는 핵에 존재하며, 세포 주기 진행 및 분화와 같은 여러 세포 과정의 조절에 관여합니다.
S100 유전자는 최소 13개의 구성원을 포함하며, 1q21 염색체에 클러스터 형태로 위치합니다.
이 단백질은 casein kinase의 억제 기능을 할 수 있으며, 발현 변화는 낭포성 섬유증과 관련이 있습니다.
