Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. They have approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes also lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, making recognition by sequence homology difficult. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein. Alternate splice variants have been described but their full-length nature has not been determined.
