Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a critical role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is functionally associated with cell proliferation and regulation.
Studies indicate that c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development. Deregulated expression of c-Myc can induce apoptosis and is implicated in numerous cancers including lung, breast, colon, and neuroblastomas.
Translocation of the c-Myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci (chromosomes 14, 2, or 22) is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell proliferative disorders.
