Target Information

Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, responsible for over 30,000 deaths per year in the USA. In 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus emerged and spread globally, leading to a pandemic declaration by WHO.
Influenza A viruses possess one of sixteen Hemagglutinin (HA) and one of nine Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. HA mediates viral attachment, while NA facilitates viral release. Both elicit immune responses that help prevent infection or reduce replication.
The swine-origin H1N1 strain combines genetic elements from human, swine, and avian influenza viruses, with additional H3N2 genes of Eurasian pig origin. Its distinct antigenic profile limits cross-immunity with seasonal influenza strains, though older populations may retain partial protection.
