Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the degenerin/epithelial sodium channel (DEG/ENaC) superfamily. Members of this family are amiloride-sensitive sodium channels containing intracellular N- and C-termini, two hydrophobic transmembrane regions, and a large extracellular loop with conserved cysteine residues.
ASIC1 is expressed in most brain neurons and functions as a cation channel with high affinity for sodium, gated by extracellular protons and inhibited by amiloride. It is permeable to Ca²⁺, Li⁺, and K⁺, and is expressed in dorsal root ganglia, sciatic nerves, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, cerebellum, and other brain regions.
Isoform 3 is expressed only in dorsal root ganglion, while isoform 1 is expressed in DRG, spinal cord, trigeminal ganglia, and trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus.
