PLD6는 미토콘드리아 외막에 존재하는 cardiolipin hydrolase로, 미토콘드리아 융합과 piRNA 대사 과정 모두에 필수적인 역할을 합니다. 이 효소는 cardiolipin을 가수분해하여 phosphatidate를 생성하며, 이는 미토콘드리아 융합을 촉진하고 piRNA 대사 과정의 조절에 관여합니다.
PLD6는 정자형성과정에서 전이요소(transposable elements)의 이동을 억제하는 데 필요하며, piRNA 및 Piwi 단백질 복합체 형성을 통해 전이요소의 메틸화 및 억제를 매개합니다.
