Target Information

Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) mediates the transfer of high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to the cytosolic carrier, creatine. It belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family and exists as two isoenzymes—sarcomeric MtCK and ubiquitous MtCK—encoded by separate genes. MtCK occurs in dimeric and octameric forms, unlike the exclusively dimeric cytosolic isoenzymes. Sarcomeric MtCK shares ~80% homology with ubiquitous MtCK. The gene contains motifs common to nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins, potentially important for coordinated activation during mitochondrial biogenesis. Three transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
