Target Information
This gene encodes UDP-galactose-4-epimerase, which catalyzes the epimerization of UDP-glucose to UDP-galactose and UDP-N-acetylglucosamine to UDP-N-acetylgalactosamine.
The enzyme’s bifunctional nature means mutant cells depend on exogenous galactose and N-acetylgalactosamine for glycoprotein and glycolipid synthesis.
Mutations result in epimerase-deficiency galactosemia (galactosemia type 3), characterized by liver damage, cataracts, deafness, and mental retardation, with severity ranging from mild (peripheral form) to severe (generalized form).
Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts encoding the same protein have been identified.
