Target Information
Na⁺/H⁺ exchangers (NHE-1 to NHE-6) are integral membrane proteins present in most mammalian tissues, regulating intracellular pH and cell volume.
These exchangers mediate the active extrusion of hydrogen ions in exchange for extracellular sodium.
While NHE-1 is ubiquitously expressed, NHE isoforms 2–6 show tissue- and cell type-specific expression and distinct inhibitory profiles to amiloride analogs.
Human NHE-5 (solute carrier family 9, isoform-5, SLC9A5) is an 896 amino acid protein expressed in brain, testis, spleen, and skeletal muscle.
