Target Information

UCP4 is a 323 amino acid mitochondrial uncoupling protein belonging to the large mitochondrial substrate carrier family with three Solcar repeats. UCP4 acts as a mitochondrial transport carrier that facilitates the transfer of anions from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and the return transfer of protons in the opposite direction. It reduces the mitochondrial membrane potential and is involved in thermoregulatory heat production. By creating proton leaks across the inner mitochondrial membrane, UCP4 uncouples oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat. UCP4 is primarily expressed in adult and fetal brain, with lower expression in spinal cord, corpus callosum, and substantia nigra.
