Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles responsible for protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These contain 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The gene encoding this cytoplasmic ribosomal protein (RPS6) is part of the S6E family and serves as a major substrate for ribosomal protein kinases. Phosphorylation at five C-terminal serine residues is regulated by various stimuli such as growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein may play a role in regulating cell growth and proliferation by selectively translating specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
