Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of conserved α/β-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends. Microtubules are essential for processes such as mitosis, meiosis, maintenance of cell shape, intracellular transport, and cellular motility via flagella and cilia. In mammalian cells, minus ends are anchored in microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). GTP is required for tubulin heterodimer association and polymerization. Microtubule dynamics vary in vivo, showing reversible polymerization and dynamic instability. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as soluble α/β dimers or polymerized microtubules, encoded by multiple tubulin genes forming distinct classes (six genes in humans).
