Target Information
Synaptotagmin 1 is a synaptic vesicle membrane glycoprotein widely expressed throughout the central nervous system. It functions as a Ca²⁺ sensor regulating exocytosis and neurotransmitter release. Synaptotagmin 1’s Ca²⁺-mediated interaction with SNAP25 is essential for Ca²⁺-dependent membrane fusion. Specific residues within its C2B domain influence endocytic rate and vesicle size. It also binds acidic phospholipids requiring both an acidic head group and diacyl backbone. Additionally, Synaptotagmin 1 interacts with neurexins, syntaxin, and AP2 in a Ca²⁺-independent manner. Dysfunction is associated with food-borne and infant botulism.
