Target Information
Phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PLC) plays a crucial role in receptor-mediated signal transduction by generating second messengers inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate and diacylglycerol from phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate.
There are multiple mammalian PLC isozymes, including PLCβ1–4, PLCγ1–2, PLCδ1–2, and PLCε. PLCδ1 acts as a calcium signal amplifier and is activated by atypical GTP-binding proteins, functioning as an effector in oxytocin receptor and α1B-adrenoreceptor signaling.
PLCδ1 is highly expressed in brain, heart, lung, and testis, and has been found abnormally accumulated in Alzheimer’s disease brains, suggesting a role in AD pathology. PLCδ2 is strongly expressed in type II intestinal metaplasia and adenocarcinoma, and its expression may serve as a potential marker for gastric malignant transformation.
