Target Information
TAS2R5 encodes a bitter taste receptor belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily, specifically expressed in taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia.
Each intronless receptor gene encodes a 7-transmembrane receptor protein responsible for bitter taste perception. TAS2R5 is clustered with three other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and genetically linked to loci influencing bitter perception.
This receptor may play a role in sensing chemical composition in the gastrointestinal tract, activating alpha gustducin, mediating PLC-beta-2 activation, and gating TRPM5. It is expressed in gustducin-positive cells and may discriminate among bitter stimuli.
