Members of the SLC4 bicarbonate transporter family are involved in solute transport and pH homeostasis.
NCBE (SLC4A10) is a sodium bicarbonate transporter highly expressed in the mammalian brain and plays a role in intracellular pH regulation and transepithelial HCO₃⁻ transport.
The SLC4A10 gene contains two alternative splicing units (inserts A and B).
Knockout mice show collapsed brain ventricles and increased seizure threshold.
Heterozygous deletions in humans are associated with idiopathic epilepsy and neurological disorders.
SLC4A10 is a promising pharmacological target for epilepsy and elevated intracranial pressure.
