Target Information

Tmem119 encodes a single-pass type I transmembrane protein that interacts with various micro-RNAs and transcription factors such as SMAD1, SMAD5, and RUNX2.
It serves as a surface marker distinguishing microglia from infiltrating macrophages. Microglia are brain-resident phagocytes responsible for debris clearance and dendrite pruning, showing high plasticity and mobility in brain remodeling areas.

Reactive microglia co-express Iba1 and can induce A1-type astrocyte differentiation through secretion of Cq1, IL-1a, and TNF under LPS stimulation.
They are implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis.
Outside the nervous system, Tmem119 may also play a role in osteoblast differentiation and ossification.
