Target Information

Class I viral fusion protein with at least three conformational states: pre-fusion native, pre-hairpin intermediate, and post-fusion hairpin. During viral and plasma cell membrane fusion, the heptad repeat (HR) regions form a trimer-of-hairpins structure, bringing the fusion peptide near the C-terminal ectodomain region. This structure facilitates membrane apposition and subsequent fusion of viral and cellular membranes. The process is pH-independent and occurs at the outer cell membrane. The trimer of F1-F2 (F protein) interacts with H at the virion surface, and upon HN receptor binding, the hydrophobic fusion peptide engages the cellular membrane, inducing fusion. Later in infection, F proteins on infected cell membranes can mediate syncytia formation, leading to tissue necrosis.
