Target Information

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into an active 17 kDa form upon inflammasome activation. Inflammasomes activate caspase-1, which processes pro-IL-1β into its active state.
IL-1β lacks a classical signal peptide and is secreted via a noncanonical pathway. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α, and its activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA).
IL-1β plays a key role in innate immune defense, inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and acute-phase responses. Elevated IL-1β levels are linked to chronic inflammatory conditions, and IL-1β neutralizing antibodies have potential therapeutic applications.
