This gene encodes a member of the F-box protein family, characterized by an approximately 40 amino acid motif known as the F-box.
F-box proteins are subunits of the ubiquitin protein ligase complex SCFs (SKP1–Cullin–F-box), which function in phosphorylation-dependent ubiquitination.
They are classified into three groups:
- Fbws: containing WD-40 domains
- Fbls: containing leucine-rich repeats
- Fbxs: containing various interaction modules or no recognizable motifs
The FBXO21 protein belongs to the Fbxs class. Alternative splicing of this gene generates two transcript variants.
