Background
The protein encoded by this gene is highly similar to Saccharomyces cerevisiae Cdc6, a protein essential for the initiation of DNA replication. It functions as a regulator at the early steps of DNA replication. The protein localizes in the nucleus during cell cycle G1 phase and translocates to the cytoplasm at the start of S phase. This translocation is regulated through phosphorylation by Cdks. Transcription of CDC6 is controlled by mitogenic signals through E2F-dependent transcriptional regulation.
