Background
The HAND1 gene encodes a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor that plays an essential role in cardiac morphogenesis. It is asymmetrically expressed in the developing ventricular chambers and functions in the formation of the right ventricle and aortic arch arteries, implicating it as a mediator of congenital heart disease. Additionally, HAND1 may be required for early trophoblast differentiation.
