Background
Neurofilaments are type IV intermediate filament heteropolymers composed of light, medium, and heavy chains. They form the axoskeleton and maintain neuronal caliber, also participating in intracellular transport to axons and dendrites. This gene belongs to the intermediate filament family and contributes to neuronal morphogenesis. (RefSeq, Jun 2009)
