Background
This gene encodes a protein identified in a screen for genes expressed in metastatic cells, particularly mammary adenocarcinoma cell lines. Expression correlates with metastatic potential in several carcinomas but is also found in normal tissues. Initially thought to be the 70 kD component of the nucleosome remodeling deacetylase complex (NuRD), it is now believed to be a similar but distinct protein. Both share domains involved in DNA binding, dimerization, and methylation-related functions, suggesting a role in transcriptional regulation through chromatin remodeling.
