Background
Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit beta (EIF2S2) is a component of the EIF-2 complex, which functions in the early steps of protein synthesis. It forms a ternary complex with GTP and initiator tRNA, binding to the 40S ribosomal subunit. EIF-2 consists of three subunits: alpha, beta, and gamma. The beta subunit catalyzes the exchange of GDP for GTP, recycling the EIF-2 complex for another round of initiation. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene (RefSeq, Oct 2015).
