Background
This gene encodes a member of the carboxylesterase large family. Members of this family are responsible for the hydrolysis or transesterification of various xenobiotics (e.g., cocaine, heroin) and endogenous substrates containing ester, thioester, or amide bonds. They may participate in fatty acyl and cholesterol ester metabolism and play a role in the blood-brain barrier system. The encoded protein is the major intestinal enzyme involved in intestinal drug clearance. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
