Background
Alpha actinins belong to the spectrin gene superfamily, a group of cytoskeletal proteins including alpha/beta spectrins and dystrophins. Alpha actinin is an actin-binding protein with multiple roles across cell types. In non-muscle cells, it is found along microfilament bundles and adherens-type junctions, binding actin to the membrane. In muscle cells, it localizes to the Z-disc and dense bodies, anchoring myofibrillar actin filaments. This gene encodes a non-muscle cytoskeletal alpha actinin isoform and maps to the same site as the erythroid beta spectrin gene. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
