Background

This gene encodes catalase, a key antioxidant enzyme in the body’s defense against oxidative stress. Catalase is a heme enzyme located in the peroxisome of nearly all aerobic cells. It converts hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, thereby mitigating its toxic effects. Oxidative stress is implicated in the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancers. Polymorphisms in this gene can reduce catalase activity, though acatalasemia is the only disease directly caused by mutations in this gene (RefSeq, Oct 2009).
