Background
The protein encoded by this gene is predicted to be a transmembrane protein. It localizes to the CpG island of the fragile site FRAXF. The 5′ untranslated region contains a CGG trinucleotide repeat sequence (normally 7–40 repeats, may expand >300). Methylation of the CpG island leads to transcriptional silencing, though this does not appear to manifest phenotypically. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. A pseudogene of this gene exists on the X chromosome. (RefSeq, Aug 2013)
