Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is believed to be involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFP proteins, vimentin is expressed along with desmin during early cellular development. During development, vimentin is replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin is implicated in steroid synthesis regulation through its role as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to intermediate filament breakdown and activation of ATP- and myosin light chain-dependent contractile events, resulting in cytoskeletal reorganization and enhanced cholesterol transport to mitochondria, promoting steroid synthesis.
