Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family involved in signal transduction, T cell differentiation, and activation. CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC-I molecules. CD8α is essential for MHC-I binding and is also found on NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells as a homodimer. Interaction with MHC-I/peptide complexes recruits Lck kinase, leading to lymphokine production and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs contribute to pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naïve CD8⁺ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
