Target Information
PBGD (porphobilinogen deaminase), also known as hydroxymethylbilane synthase (HMBS), is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in the heme synthesis pathway.
Deficiency of PBGD causes errors in pyrrole metabolism, leading to acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), an inherited autosomal disorder characterized by acute neurological dysfunctions, hypertension, tachycardia, peripheral neuropathies, abdominal pain, and excessive aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen in urine.
