Target Information
eIF4E is involved in several cellular processes including translational efficiency, splicing, mRNA stability, and RNA nuclear export. All eukaryotic mRNAs possess a 7-methylguanosine cap structure (m7GpppX). EIF4E functions as a eukaryotic translation initiation factor directing ribosomes to this cap structure. It is a 24-kD polypeptide existing in free form or as part of the EIF4F complex. EIF4E is a rate-limiting component in mRNA-ribosome binding during protein synthesis. Other EIF4F subunits include EIF4A (50 kD, ATPase and RNA helicase activities) and EIF4G (220 kD).
